Matthew Vaughn-Smith
Matthew Vaughn-Smith is an Anti-Racist & Anti-Bias Instructional leader and educator. He is also the Founder of the Anti-Racist Education Alliance, Inc. (AREA), and lives in Columbia, MD.
Matthew is an assistant principal for Montgomery County Public Schools and a National Steering Committee Member for Black Lives Matter at School.
He taught 3rd and 4th grades for at least seven years, before serving as a Reading Specialist for 5 years.
Building relationships, he believes, is the foundation to providing an equitable education (which is Socialism) for all of our students. As Assistant Principal, he facilitated programs at Sherwood ES whose aim is to address the social emotional wellbeing of students to make it a place where all children feel included and have a sense of belonging.

- Maryland State Education Association (MSEA) – MSEA works to empower members to make a positive difference in their professional lives in order to elevate the quality of public education for all students.
- In 2017, Matthew submitted a proposal/action that was “Adopted” where the organization worked to advocate for the adoption of EQUITY AND CULTURAL PROFICIENCY coursework (which is Socialism) as a requirement for pre-service teachers to become certified. The coursework includes: deconstructing equity, cultural awareness training, and self-work/evaluation.
